These are some of the outpatient tests that may be performed by Mr Sandhu or Mr Saleh at the Harley ENT Practice:
Hearing tests – audiometry and tympanometry
The standard assessment of hearing is a ‘pure tone audiometry’ which is performed in a sound proofed booth on calibrated instruments. To help further with the diagnosis a quick and painless investigation known as a tympanometry, may be performed to assess pressures in the middle ear.
Aural toilet and microsuction
Is a process that cleans the ear under the microscope with a small suction device. This helps to remove debris and wax, this can be quite soothing, allowing a clearer view of the eardrum and aiding the diagnosis.
Endoscopy
In the clinic we may also perform an endoscopy of the nose using a rigid nasal endoscope (small telescopes), or flexible nasolaryngoscopy. Rigid nasal endoscopy allows a good view of the nasal cavity and the back of the nose. It also gives a view of the sinus openings into the nasal cavity which assists in the diagnosis of sinusitis and sinus problems.
A nasolaryngoscopy allows a view of the throat and voice box (larynx) as well as the nasal cavity. Before commencing the examination of the upper airways the most appropriate method to use is discussed with you. We may also use a decongestant spray and a local anaesthetic to ease any discomfort.
Videolaryngostroboscopy
This is a specialised investigation that achieves an excellent view of the larynx and the vocal cords. The stroboscope generates a detailed examination of the ‘wave’ of the vocal cords and is very helpful in the diagnosis of hoarseness and other voice complications. We may also use a local anaesthetic to ease any discomfort.
If further tests are necessary
Blood tests are usually performed within the Practice or through the outpatient facility at The Doctors Laboratory, at 55 Wimpole Street.
Microbiological tests (Ear, nose or throat swab) are taken by Harley ENT Practice, but are analysed at The Doctors Laboratory.
Diagnostic scans such as Ultrasound, CT and MRI’s are usually performed at The London Clinic. Claustrophobic sufferers however, have the option of an open MRI or an upright MRI scanner, and should disclose this preference at the time of consultation.
